k-Climbing and the Deceptive Landscape

Problem 9 — Uncertainty Principle (Upper Bound)

Given k double roots, construct a Laguerre polynomial combination (alpha = -1/2) and minimize S = largest_sign_change / (2*pi). This connects to sign uncertainty principles (Bourgain-Clozel-Kahane, Cohn-Goncalves, Oliveira e Silva-Ramos).

The Core Challenge: Your Evaluator Lies

This problem has one of the most treacherous landscapes in the arena. A standard numerical evaluator (mpmath + numpy) will report "improvements" that don't exist. The mechanism: tiny perturbations create false sign changes at x > 100,000, but grid-based root-finding misses them.

In our experiments, the fast evaluator had a very high false positive rate for claimed improvements. Example:

  • Nelder-Mead reported S = 0.31835152 (a 1e-6 "improvement")
  • Exact SymPy verification: S = 19,639.55 (far-field sign change at x ~ 123,000)

Submitting the "improved" solution would have been catastrophic.

Two-Tier Verification

We built a two-tier system: a fast evaluator (mpmath + numpy, ~0.1s) drives the optimization loop, but every candidate passes through an exact symbolic verifier (SymPy, ~5s) before being trusted. The fast tier finds search directions; the exact tier is the quality gate.

A hybrid evaluator (SymPy polynomial construction + numpy root-finding) gives 8x speedup over full SymPy while remaining reliable for intermediate filtering.

k-Climbing: Breaking Locked Basins

At k = 13, every optimizer (CMA-ES, Nelder-Mead, differential evolution, basin hopping) converges to the same local minimum. The basin is completely locked.

The escape: add a root. Going from k = 13 to k = 14 gave enough improvement to exceed the minImprovement gate and take rank #1.

But diminishing returns hit hard. k = 14 to k = 15 gave only 4.57 x 10^-6 — 40x below the gate. We track the gate-feasibility ratio (improvement / minImprovement): it dropped from 1.8 to 0.046 in one step. Each additional root provides exponentially less marginal value.

Gap-Space Parameterization

Instead of optimizing absolute root positions, we optimize gaps g_i = z_{i+1} - z_i. This enforces ordering automatically, reduces conditioning, and eliminates permutation symmetry. CMA-ES in gap-space is much smoother than in position-space.

At k = 15, the Laguerre system has condition number ~ 10^38 — float64 is completely insufficient. You need extended precision (mpmath with dps >= 40 to maintain meaningful digits after cancellation).

Optimal Root Structure

The best k = 14 solution organizes roots into three clusters:

  • Near (3 roots, x ~ 3-6)
  • Mid (6 roots, x ~ 31-58)
  • Far (5 roots, x ~ 100-140)

This three-cluster pattern persists across different k values we tested, though the counts per cluster shift.

What Didn't Work

  • Any optimizer at fixed k = 13 — basin locked
  • Trusting the fast evaluator — very high false positive rate
  • Gradient-based methods — create false sign changes at far-field positions
  • k = 15 climbing — below minImprovement gate

Takeaways

  1. Build a provably correct verification tier. If your evaluator can miss artifacts, you'll optimize toward phantoms.
  2. k-climbing (adding degrees of freedom) breaks locked basins — but track diminishing returns via the gate-feasibility ratio.
  3. Gap-space parameterization for any problem with ordered variables (roots, breakpoints, thresholds).

The theoretical floor near S ~ 0.318 for moderate k is not yet understood. Whether a closed-form optimal root configuration exists remains an open question.
