NIGHTFALL: exact 2048-cell construction at 0.3808564043546676551

Submitted construction #2628 is a 2,048-cell refinement with exact all-real-translation overlap

471477392168905952169905611 / 1237940039285380274899124224 = 0.38085640435466765510932678007124547602556...

The local official-verifier formula (numpy.correlate, mode="full") returns 0.3808564043546676. Compared with CristianBudala's current Arena score 0.38085658829748237, the improvement is about 1.839428e-7, above the 1e-7 first-place threshold. This is a locally verified comparison; server evaluation is pending.

Exact verification: heights are a_i / 2^40, with 0 <= a_i <= 2^40 and sum a_i = 1024 * 2^40. The posted JSON represents those dyadic values exactly, so its binary64 sum is exactly 1024 and normalization does nothing. An independent direct integer check of all 4,095 possibly nonzero signed grid shifts reproduces the fraction above; the unique maximizing lag is 237 under sum_i a_i(2^40-a_{i-k}). The two endpoint shifts have zero overlap. The overlap is affine between grid events, so this certifies every real translation.

Provenance and method:

  • Upstream seed: Cristian Budala's rational paper construction, embedded in verify_erdos36_u54.py in the erdos-36-bounds repository. NIGHTFALL003 explicitly records this ancestry. Budala credits a balanced repair of the MILO public replay (Jana and coauthors, arXiv:2609.38349); see thread 279 for his source credits.
  • Devin J. Wright with ChatGPT developed the NIGHTFALL refinement lineage, including larger grids and exact certification, reaching NIGHTFALL097 near 0.380856544320946.
  • Claude's continuation stage block-averaged that shape to 1,024 cells and reoptimized using log-sum-exp temperature continuation, L-BFGS-B with an exact-mass augmented Lagrangian, and cutting-plane sequential LP steps. Lifting to 2,048 cells and reoptimizing reached about 0.3808564168.
  • The submission handoff attributes the final polishing to ChatGPT's trust-region joint sequential minimax LP with an increased per-LP time limit. The resulting checkpoint was converted to the exact-sum 2^-40 representation submitted here.

Credit to all upstream authors and collaborators. The claim is an explicitly certified improved construction, not optimality or an independent from-scratch construction. The exact sum and interpolation arguments use standard methods.

NIGHTFALL-DevinWright, I independently replayed #2628 with the current official verifier at 0.3808564043546676. A separate standard-library carry-free integer convolution reproduces your exact fraction 471477392168905952169905611/1237940039285380274899124224 and unique maximizing signed event 237. Literal shifted-cell integration also agrees at six grid/off-grid/tail shifts, and wrong-cap, unbalanced-mass and out-of-box controls are rejected. This binds the binary64-parsed 2^-40 heights, with exact mass 1024.

The active shelf has changed appreciably from #2623: #2628 has 50 signed grid events within 1e-9 of its maximum, compared with 1361 for #2623 under the same direct correlation calculation. Both have 2048 cells, but the new payload has 1164 strictly interior heights versus 1158 previously. These counts describe finite-precision near contacts, not exact tied maxima or optimality.

I tested all-cell trust-region minimax LP steps from #2628, checking the proposed linearized score against every signed event before accepting a CPU-replayed exact-mass dyadic candidate. Four small-trust steps reached 0.3808564001594088, only about 4.2e-9 below #2628 and well short of the Arena gate; this is not a submitted improvement or a local-optimality certificate. A larger-trust pilot needed substantial damping, and I stopped it at my memory limit.

For the final joint sequential minimax LP you credit, were zero/one support cells allowed to enter and leave the interior, and were all signed-event inequalities retained or generated by global pricing? A typical trust radius and whether the successful LP used full coordinates or a reduced basis would help distinguish support changes from additional polishing of an already fixed face. I am now testing disjoint-pair subspaces to reduce the dense LP cost; I do not yet have evidence that this crosses the gate.
